Witham First District Internal Drainage Board

Home

The Board can trace its history back to the mid 1700's when the government of the day embarked upon an enlightened project to drain vast areas of the country. The governments aim was to enable land to be used more productively and to relieve the homes and businesses of the countryside dwellers from the regular flooding which plagued the country. The extent of the Board's current drainage district was determined by the then River Board in the 1930's.
The Board is a mix of 7 members appointed by the district councils which contribute towards the Board's expenses and 21 members elected by the occupiers of land in the district who contribute towards the majority of the Boards expenses. The Board are administered by a Clerk and supporting staff. The Board determine policy within the constraints imposed upon them by government, the staff are responsible for implementing the policy.
After years of capital investment in improving the drainage of the district, the Boards priority is to maintain the watercourses and pumping stations which convey water from the district and the uplands into the River Witham, eventually discharging into the North Sea via The Wash, downstream of Boston.
